A Little Bit of History…

The Detroit Foundation Hotel is a bridge between the past and the present, because the building once served as the city’s Fire Department Headquarters. Rather than replace the historic terrazzo floor, the designers specified for Stone Restoration Services to refinish it to a luxurious, yet “imperfect” state, much like the historical exposed brick walls, so that guests could have an authentic downtown Detroit experience.

Dirty, Stained, Dull Terrazzo

The terrazzo floor had layer upon layer of old wax coatings, as well as dirt, stains, scratches, and a very dull finish. See for yourself in the BEFORE images how unsightly the floor was when we arrived.

Terrazzo Honed, Polished, and Sealed

First, we used a diamond grinding process to completely remove all the waxes and coatings, as you can see in the DURING images. Then, we honed and polished the floor, using the same methods as traditional marble and other natural stone restoration, to give it a beautiful, natural polish that would eliminate the need for continuous stripping and waxing. Finally, we sealed the terrazzo to inhibit the absorption of stains. Notice the dramatic difference in the AFTER images.
