You don’t always need a major renovation to make a big difference in your home.
Sometimes the surfaces you already have just need some attention.
Marble floors lose their shine. Kitchen counters get scratched and etched. Stone showers start to look cloudy or worn. It happens slowly, so you may not notice how much the stone has changed until you really stop and look at it.
The good news is that natural stone can often be restored.
At SRS, we restore marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo and other stone surfaces throughout Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan, including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Grosse Pointe, Northville, West Bloomfield, Rochester Hills and nearby communities.
Here are a few stone restoration projects that can make a big difference in a home.
Bring a Dull Marble Foyer Back to Life
A marble entryway takes a lot of wear.
Shoes, dirt, pets, winter salt and everyday foot traffic can slowly wear down the finish. After a while, the marble may look dull, scratched or uneven.
That doesn’t mean the stone is worn out.
Marble floors can often be honed and polished to remove surface wear and bring back a smooth, even finish. Chips and small areas of damage may also be repaired as part of the restoration.
This can make a big difference in a foyer or entryway because it’s one of the first things you see when you walk into the home.
If you have good stone, it’s usually worth finding out if it can be restored before thinking about replacing it.
Refinish Marble Kitchen Countertops and Islands
Kitchen counters get used every day, and marble tends to show it.
Lemon juice, wine, vinegar and other acidic foods can leave dull spots called etches. Over time, you may also see scratches, worn areas and changes in the finish, especially around the sink and the busiest parts of the kitchen.
These marks are often in the surface of the stone, which means regular cleaning won’t remove them.
Professional honing and polishing can remove many of these signs of wear and give the countertops a clean, even finish again.
You also have choices when it comes to the final look. Some homeowners like a high polish, while others prefer a softer honed or satin finish.
A good restoration should work with the stone and with the way you use your kitchen.
Give an Older Stone Bathroom a Fresh Start
Stone bathrooms can be beautiful, but they can also be difficult to keep looking good.
Water, soap, minerals and cleaning products can build up over time. Marble, limestone and travertine can also become scratched, etched or dull.
Eventually, the bathroom may start to look older than it really is.
Before you start thinking about replacing the stone, have it looked at.
A professional cleaning and restoration can often bring back the color and finish of the stone. Worn areas can be honed and polished, and some chips, cracks and other damage can be repaired.
If you have a bathroom with a lot of natural stone, restoring what is already there can completely change the room without tearing it apart.
Fix the Chips and Scratches You See Every Day
Sometimes one small area can bother you more than an entire worn floor.
It might be a chip on the edge of the kitchen island. A scratch across the marble. A cracked tile. Or a spot that looks different from everything around it.
Once you notice it, you keep noticing it.
Many chips, scratches and other areas of damage can be repaired or made much less noticeable.
If the rest of the surface is worn too, we can often repair the damaged area and refinish the surrounding stone at the same time.
You may be surprised by what can be fixed.
Restore Stone After a Larger Home Update
Maybe you’ve painted, refinished the cabinets, changed the lighting or brought in new furniture.
Now everything looks fresh except the stone.
This happens a lot. Once the rest of a room is updated, an older marble floor, countertop or fireplace can suddenly look more worn than it did before.
That doesn’t mean it needs to go.
Restoring the existing stone can help it fit back into the room. Scratches and dull areas can often be removed, and the finish can be changed or brought back depending on the look you want.
This can be especially worthwhile in older homes in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Grosse Pointe, Northville and other established communities around Metro Detroit, where quality stone may have been installed many years ago.
Older stone isn’t necessarily outdated. Sometimes it just needs to be restored.
Bring Older Terrazzo Floors Back
Terrazzo is another surface that can change a lot over the years.
Old coatings, wax, dirt and years of foot traffic can hide what the floor really looks like. Some terrazzo floors have been covered or maintained the same way for so long that homeowners don’t realize how good the original floor can look.
Instead of covering it up or replacing it, the terrazzo may be able to be cleaned, repaired, honed and polished.
For an older home, this can be a great way to keep an original part of the house while giving it a much cleaner, updated look.
Sometimes It’s Hard to Know What Your Stone Needs.
Stone can change slowly over time. One day you notice the marble isn’t as shiny as it used to be. The floor looks dull even after you clean it. There are scratches on the kitchen island, or the shower just never seems to look clean.
It can be hard to know what’s causing it or what to do about it.
That’s where we come in.
SRS can take a look at the stone, identify what you have and figure out why it looks worn. Sometimes it needs polishing. Sometimes it needs a deeper restoration, repair or better protection. It may even be buildup from years of cleaning products.
You don’t need to figure it out before you call us.
If your stone doesn’t look the way it used to, start with an evaluation. We’ll take a look and tell you what it needs.
Restore What You Already Have
Natural stone can last for decades.
A scratched marble floor doesn’t always need to be replaced. Neither does a dull countertop or an older stone shower.
A lot of the stone we work on simply needs the right kind of care to look good again.
SRS restores natural stone and hard surfaces throughout Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan, including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Grosse Pointe, Northville, West Bloomfield, Rochester Hills and surrounding areas.
