Stone protection starts with attention to the surface underneath. For this Detroit project, SRS combined stone countertop refinishing and sink-edge detailing with a satin TuffSkin® film application—addressing existing wear while adding protection for everyday use.
The Project: Refine the Surface and Smooth a Chipped Sink Edge
The job centered on refinishing the stone tops and addressing chips along the front edge of the sink opening. Our approach included softening and easing that edge to create a smoother transition, then applying satin TuffSkin to the countertop tops.
The edge work and protective film served different purposes: refinishing and edge detailing addressed the existing stone, while TuffSkin added a protective barrier over the flat top surfaces.
What Is TuffSkin?
SRS Detroit offers TuffSkin surface protection for natural stone countertops and other suitable surfaces. TuffSkin is a clear protective film engineered to protect stone from acid etching and staining. It is especially useful for acid-sensitive stones such as marble, onyx, and travertine.
Etching happens when acidic substances react with the stone, leaving dull marks. TuffSkin creates a barrier between those substances and the protected surface while keeping the stone’s natural pattern visible. Available in gloss and satin finishes, it provides options for different design preferences. This project used satin for a softer, low-sheen appearance.
TuffSkin is applied to flat tops rather than wrapped around countertop edges or sink openings. It is scratch-resistant, but still requires proper care, including nonabrasive cleaning and avoiding cutting directly on the film.
Stone Protection Options for Southeast Michigan
Every stone surface has different needs. SRS offers stone protection consultations to help you choose an approach based on your stone, its condition, how you use it, and your preferred finish.
Our services include traditional penetrating sealers, TuffSkin, and other protective treatments, along with professional cleaning, refinishing, polishing, and ongoing maintenance guidance. Traditional penetrating sealers help resist staining, but they do not prevent acid etching on sensitive stone—a key distinction when comparing protection options.
Whether you are addressing existing damage or protecting a newly installed surface, SRS can help you plan for both restoration and continued care.
